Bike Parts for E-Bikes and Conversion Builds

Every part on this page is stocked with one question in mind: will it hold up on a bike that's carrying a motor and a battery? A conversion kit adds weight, raises sustained speed, and puts torque through components that were specced for legs alone. The wheels, brakes, forks and drivetrain parts that came on your bike were designed for a lighter, slower machine — and they're usually the first things to complain once the motor goes on.

We're a working Cardiff bike shop, not a warehouse. These are the parts we actually fit in our own workshop when a customer's conversion needs stronger wheels, better stopping power, or a fork that can handle the extra front-end load. If you're not sure whether something fits your frame, message us before you order — we'd rather answer a question than process a return.

Wheels, Rims and Tyres

Spoke tension and rim strength matter far more on an electric bike than a standard one. Our MTX 39 36-hole rim is the one we reach for most on conversion builds, and it's available ready-built as a quick-release front wheel (100mm × 9mm) or a thru-axle front wheel (110mm × 15mm). Check which axle standard your fork uses before ordering — these two are not interchangeable, and it's the single most common mistake we see on wheel orders. If you're after a straightforward replacement rather than an upgrade, the 32-spoke steel front wheel covers standard mountain and road bike fitments.

On tyres we stock three Schwalbe models covering three genuinely different jobs: the Big Betty for aggressive enduro and downhill grip, the Johnny Watts 365 as an all-season all-rounder, and the Marathon Plus Tour when puncture resistance matters more than outright weight — the usual choice for commuting and touring.

Brakes and Suspension

Brakes are where we most often see an under-specced converted bike. A heavier bike travelling faster needs more than a basic two-piston setup, which is why we stock a four-piston hydraulic caliper alongside the Shimano BL-MT200 hydraulic set.

On the front end we carry three suspension forks at different levels — the Bolany for cross-country and light trail use, the KKE built specifically for the demands of electric bikes, and the air-sprung NANLIO with a 110 × 15mm thru-axle.

Drivetrain

If you're running a mid-drive kit, this section matters more than you'd expect. A Bafang BBS motor drives the chain through your existing cassette, so the whole drivetrain sees load no rider could produce unassisted. Chains, cassettes and derailleurs become consumables on a mid-drive build rather than fit-and-forget parts — we stock a 5-8 speed chain, a 7 speed freewheel cassette, a single speed 22T freewheel for hub-motor builds where the original gearing is redundant, and a 7-8 speed rear derailleur.

Mudguards, Saddles, Lights and Security

The practical end of the range. Mudguards in three fitments — a rear mountain bike mudguard, a full front and rear set, and a Surron-style front mudguard for that build. Two comfort saddles: a sprung shock-absorbing seat and a padded ergonomic saddle.

For lighting, a compact six-mode headlight or a LED light bar with an integrated horn. An electric bike is a more attractive target than an ordinary bicycle, so we also stock the Oxford Patrol 1.0 shackle lock — and a heavier converted bike needs a stronger stand than the one it came with, which is what the adjustable aluminium kick stand is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need stronger parts after fitting a conversion kit?+

Usually yes, in a specific order. Brakes come first — a converted bike is heavier and holds higher speeds, so stopping distances grow and pads and rotors work harder. Wheels come second, particularly on hub-motor builds where the motor's torque is applied directly at the spokes. Drivetrain wear accelerates on mid-drive kits because the motor's power runs through your chain and cassette. Forks matter most if you're riding off-road or running a high-power kit. A well-built bike with a modest 250W kit may need nothing at all; a 3000W hub conversion on an old hardtail almost certainly does.

What's the difference between quick-release and thru-axle, and which do I need?+

They're two different ways of holding the wheel into the fork, and they aren't interchangeable. A quick-release uses a thin skewer through a hollow axle with open dropouts — our QR front wheel is the 100mm × 9mm standard. A thru-axle is a thicker rod that threads through closed fork ends, which is stiffer and more secure — our thru-axle front wheel is 110mm × 15mm, the common modern boost standard. Look at your fork: if the wheel drops out from below when you open the lever, it's quick-release; if you have to withdraw a rod all the way through, it's thru-axle. If you're unsure, send us a photo of your fork end before ordering.

Will these parts fit a normal bicycle as well as an e-bike?+

Yes. Everything here uses standard bicycle fitments, so it works on a conventional bike just as well as an electric one — we simply select stock with the extra demands of e-bikes in mind, which means it tends to be built stronger than the minimum a pedal bike needs. The parts most worth checking for fitment are wheels (axle standard and width), tyres (wheel diameter and clearance), forks (steerer and axle) and cassettes (freewheel versus freehub, and speed count).

Can you fit these parts for me?+

We can. Our workshop is at 2 Beresford Road Lane, Roath, Cardiff CF24 1QU, and we fit wheels, brakes, forks, drivetrain parts and complete conversion kits. Brake and fork work in particular is worth having done properly — hydraulic systems need bleeding correctly and a fork swap involves the headset and steerer cut. Message us on WhatsApp to check availability and get a price before you bring the bike in.

How do I know what tyre size to order?+

Read it off the tyre already on your bike. The sidewall carries the size in inches (for example 27.5 × 2.40) and usually an ETRTO number too. The first figure is the wheel diameter and has to match your rim exactly; the second is the width, where you have some latitude, provided the tyre still clears your frame, fork and any mudguards. If you're fitting wider tyres than the bike came with, check clearance at the chainstays and fork crown before ordering.
