Why 36 Holes Matters on a Converted Bike
Modern mountain bikes drifted to 32, 28 and even 24 spokes because the bikes got lighter and the rims got deeper. An electric conversion pushes in the opposite direction. Add a motor, a battery, a rack and the extra momentum that comes with sustained assisted speed, and the wheel is carrying more mass and absorbing bigger impacts than the designer ever planned for. Spread that load over 36 spokes instead of 32 and each spoke sees less of it, tension stays more even, and the wheel holds true for longer between visits to the truing stand.
That is the whole argument for the MTX 39 rim in 36H. It is the rim we reach for when a customer tells us their stock wheel keeps going out of true after a conversion, or when they have already snapped a couple of drive-side spokes and want to stop replacing them one at a time.
Double Wall, and What That Actually Buys You
A double-wall rim has a second wall of material bridging the spoke bed and the tyre bed, forming a closed box section. Compared with a single-wall rim of similar weight, that box is far stiffer in torsion and much better at resisting the pull of spoke tension through the nipple seat — which is exactly where cheap rims fail, by cracking or pulling through around the spoke holes. It also stands up better to the pinch impacts you get running a wide tyre at commuter pressures over Cardiff kerbs and potholes.
It is a rim built for mountain bikes, electric bikes and trekking bikes rather than a lightweight race build, and it is happiest with a wide tyre and a proper spoke count under it.
Building It Up
Spoke length depends on the rim’s effective rim diameter, your hub’s flange diameter and spacing, and whether you lace two-cross or three-cross — so measure or ask before you buy spokes. Get it wrong by two millimetres and you will either bottom out the nipples or leave thread showing. If you are rebuilding around an existing hub motor from one of our conversion kits, bring us the motor and we will work the lengths out with you; our workshop can lace and tension the wheel for you too.
Once built, fit rim tape before the tube — the spoke holes are exposed and an untaped bed will chew through an inner tube in a matter of miles. For tyres in this size range, the Schwalbe Johnny Watts 365 27.5 x 2.60 and the Schwalbe Big Betty 27.5 x 2.40 are both natural partners for a wide 27.5in build.
Warranty and Returns
Every rim purchased from All4eBikes is covered by a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects, alongside a 30-day return window.
Not Sure Which Size or Spoke Length You Need?
Tell us the hub you are building onto and the wheel size you are running, and we will confirm the rim and work out spoke lengths with you before you order.
