Wide and Padded Without the Height Penalty
The usual problem with buying a comfort saddle is that most of them raise your riding position noticeably. A sprung saddle has to put the spring assembly somewhere, and that somewhere is directly under you. At 85 mm this one is close enough to a normal saddle’s build height that you can fit it and ride away without rebuilding your whole position — a genuine advantage if you already have your fit dialled in and only want more support under your sit bones.
The shape is the other half of it. At 195 mm wide it gives a broad platform at the rear where your sit bones sit, which is what actually matters if you ride upright on a hybrid, city bike or commuter — in that position most of your weight goes straight down through the back of the saddle rather than being spread across your hands and feet. Deep, high-density foam over that width is what stops it concentrating into two sore points on a long ride. High density is deliberate, incidentally: soft foam feels better in the shop and worse at mile fifteen, because it bottoms out and you end up sitting on the shell.
Ventilation, Weather and Longer E-Bike Rides
The perforated cover is not decoration. Sitting on a wide saddle for an hour traps heat and moisture where you least want it, and a perforated surface lets some of it out. That is more relevant on an electric bike than a pedal one: assistance means you spend far more of the ride seated, and a rider who would previously have covered five miles now regularly covers fifteen or twenty. Longer seated time is exactly what turns a mildly uncomfortable saddle into a reason to stop riding.
The water-resistant outer matters for the same practical reason. A bike left outside a shop or a station in British weather ends up with a wet saddle, and an absorbent cover stays wet for the ride home. A water-resistant one wipes off. If you park outside regularly, pair it with a decent lock — our Shackle Lock OXFORD PATROL 1.0 is in the same category.
Choosing Between Our Two Comfort Saddles
Both are wide, both are cushioned, but they solve comfort differently, so pick on how you ride:
Choose this saddle if you want a low build height that keeps your existing position, a solid platform with no spring movement, a slightly longer and slightly narrower shape (260 × 195 mm), and a water-resistant perforated cover. Choose the Bicycle seat if your priority is absorbing sharp impacts from poor surfaces — it adds spring and ball shock absorbers, is 5 mm wider, includes a built-in rear reflector, and weighs 670–700 g, but its 130 mm height means resetting your saddle position. If you are riding a rigid or hardtail conversion on rough lanes, the sprung one is usually the answer. If you are commuting on tarmac and already comfortable with your fit, this is.
