People often fit one guard, decide the problem is solved, and then wonder why they are still arriving wet. The two ends throw water in completely different directions. The front wheel fires spray backwards onto your feet, your shins and the down tube — and on a converted bike, onto whatever is bolted to that down tube. The rear wheel throws it upwards onto your back and the saddle. Fixing one leaves the other untouched, which is why buying the pair usually ends the argument in a single go.
The adjustable mounting is the practical part of this set. Mountain bike frames vary enormously in tyre clearance, and a guard fixed at one length either rubs a fat tyre or sits so far away it stops catching anything. Being able to set the position for your actual wheel and tyre is what makes the difference between a guard that works and one that rattles.
A bike with a conversion kit on it gets ridden further and in worse weather than it did before, simply because assistance removes the reason to stay in. It also carries components a normal bike does not: a controller, a wiring loom, and a battery on the down tube or the rack. Those parts are built to cope with rain, but none of them benefit from a constant blast of gritty road spray, and connectors in particular do better when they are shielded from it.
Two things to check before you fit. First, clearance: set the guards with enough gap that a mud-loaded tyre still turns freely, not the tightest gap that looks neat in the dry. Second, cable routing — on a conversion the motor cable and brake cut-off wiring often run exactly where a guard stay wants to sit, so route the wiring first and mount the guards around it.
