What the Tread Is Doing
The Big Betty’s pattern is built around two jobs. The centre blocks carry long, supported braking edges — the ramps behind each block stop it folding under load, so the edge stays square and bites when you drag the brake on a steep, loose descent instead of squirming. The shoulder blocks are large and heavily buttressed, which is what holds the line when you lean the bike over and load the outside edge in a berm or a rutted corner.
Between the blocks the spacing is deliberately open. That is what lets it clear mud and wet leaf litter rather than packing solid and turning into a slick, and it is why the tyre keeps working as a Welsh trail goes from dusty to greasy over the course of an afternoon. Schwalbe position it as a downhill and enduro allrounder for dry to damp conditions, and that is a fair description of where it shines.
Why Grip Matters More on a Converted Bike
An electric bike asks more of a tyre in two directions at once. Under power, the motor delivers torque far more abruptly than legs do, so the contact patch is being asked to put down drive on surfaces where a rider would normally have spun out and eased off. Under braking, the extra system weight of a motor, a battery and the bike itself has to be shed through the same two patches of rubber, from a higher average speed.
That is why an aggressive, grippy tyre on a converted bike is not an indulgence. If you have fitted one of our conversion kits to a hardtail and are riding it off-road, the stock cross-country tyre is very often the first thing that stops feeling adequate — long before the brakes or the wheels do.
Choosing Between Our Three Schwalbes
All three of the 27.5in Schwalbe tyres we stock are E-50 rated, and they sit in clearly different places. The Big Betty is the grip tyre — pick it if your riding is genuinely off-road and cornering and braking traction is the thing you want most. The Johnny Watts 365 27.5 x 2.60 is the all-rounder, with a siped tread for year-round road, gravel and light trail use. The Marathon Plus Tour 27.5 x 2.35 trades outright grip for the heaviest puncture protection, for commuting and touring mileage.
Fitting it to a fresh build? The MTX Front Wheel Thru Axle and MTX Front Wheel Quick-Release are both available in 27.5in, and the MTX 39 rim is a wide double-wall rim that suits a 2.40 tyre well.
