What Smart DualGuard Actually Is
Most “puncture resistant” tyres are a thin belt of woven fabric and a marketing name. The Marathon Plus family is different, and this size uses Schwalbe’s Smart DualGuard: a 4mm layer of SmartGuard special rubber, backed by two plies of RaceGuard fabric. Four millimetres of elastic rubber is a lot of material. A drawing pin or a shard of glass presses into it and the rubber deforms around the point rather than letting it through to the tube, then pushes the object back out as the tyre rolls on. The RaceGuard plies behind it catch anything sharp enough to work through.
It is not a magic tyre — nothing is — but it is the difference between changing a tube a few times a winter and changing one every couple of years. On a bike used for commuting through a city with glass and hedge trimmings on the cycle lanes, that is the specification worth paying for.
Specified for an Electric Bike, Not Just Tolerated by One
Two numbers say this tyre was designed with assisted bikes in mind. The first is the 136kg load rating per tyre, which gives real headroom once you have added a motor, a battery, a rack and a fortnight’s luggage to a bike that already carries you. The second is the E-50 approval, covering fast e-bikes and S-Pedelecs with motor assistance beyond 25 km/h — sustained higher speed puts more heat and more energy through a tyre than most people realise, and E-50 is the certification that says the casing is built for it.
The Addix E compound is Schwalbe’s e-bike-specific rubber, aimed at wear resistance and rolling efficiency under those loads rather than at outright cornering grip. Combined with a usable pressure window from 1.8 to 3.7 bar, you can run it hard and fast on tarmac or drop the pressure for comfort and grip on a rough towpath without leaving the tyre’s designed range.
Choosing Between This and Our Other Schwalbes
The Marathon Plus Tour is the endurance choice: mixed-surface tread that works on tarmac and unmade paths, maximum protection, long mileage, and a reflective sidewall for winter commuting. Its trade-offs are honest ones — it is heavier and less lively than a lighter tyre, and it will not match a proper off-road tread for grip in mud.
If you ride mostly off-road and want cornering and braking bite, take the Schwalbe Big Betty 27.5 x 2.40. If you want a year-round all-rounder that leans further towards grip and comfort while still protecting well, the Johnny Watts 365 27.5 x 2.60 is the middle ground. Fitting to a new build? Our MTX Front Wheel Quick-Release and MTX 39 rim are both available in 27.5in. Browse the full range in bike parts.
