How to Tell You Need a Quick Release Front Wheel
Stand the bike up and look at the bottom of the fork. A quick-release fork has a slot open at the bottom — the wheel drops out downwards once the lever is flipped and the nut backed off, and there are usually small lawyer lips either side of the slot to stop it falling out if the lever is loose. The axle passing through the hub is 9mm, and the hub itself measures 100mm between the outer faces of the locknuts. That combination — 100mm over-locknut distance, 9mm quick-release skewer — is what this wheel is built to.
It has been the standard front end on mountain bikes, hybrids and trekking bikes for decades, which is why the great majority of bikes that get converted to electric still use it. If you are unsure, measure the gap between the inside faces of your fork ends with a ruler: 100mm means this wheel; 110mm means Boost, and you want the thru-axle version.
Built for the Loads a Conversion Adds
A bike that has just gained a conversion kit and a battery is a different machine from the one that left the factory. It is heavier at rest, it carries far more momentum at speed, and the front brake now has to shed all of that energy — which loads the front wheel harder every time you slow down, not just when you hit something. Stock budget front wheels tend to show it first: a wobble that comes back a week after truing, then loose spokes, then a flat spot.
This wheel answers that with an MTX rim laced on heavy-duty spokes, so there is more material where the failures actually happen. It stays true under repeated braking, tracks predictably through corners with the extra weight on board, and takes kerb and pothole hits without needing constant attention. If you would rather build your own around a hub you already have, the same rim family is available on its own as the MTX 39 rim in 36H.
Setting It Up
The wheel arrives without a tyre, tube or rotor. Fit rim tape and a tube, torque the rotor bolts properly, then re-centre the brake caliper — a new wheel almost never lines up with the old caliper position first time. Close the quick-release lever so it takes firm pressure from halfway and finishes pointing back along the fork leg, not out sideways where it can catch. After the first fifty miles or so, have the spoke tension checked; every new wheel beds in, and on an electric bike it beds in faster.
Choosing a tyre at the same time? For 27.5in builds, the Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour 27.5 x 2.35 is the commuting choice, the Johnny Watts 365 27.5 x 2.60 covers all-season mixed riding, and the Big Betty 27.5 x 2.40 is the one for real off-road grip. Browse the rest of the range in bike parts.
