Bafang mid-drive motors are the gold standard for electric bike conversions — trusted worldwide for durable planetary gearing, smooth pedal-assist delivery, and a plug-and-play install that keeps the bike frame you already know and love. Every Bafang mid drive kit we stock is UK-warehoused, dispatched next day, and can be professionally fitted at our Cardiff workshop or shipped ready to install at home.
Unlike a hub motor, a Bafang mid-drive kit powers your bike through its own gears — so the motor works with your cassette rather than against it, giving you real hill-climbing torque, a lower centre of gravity, and handling that feels far closer to a normal bicycle. We stock the full Bafang line-up: the road-legal BBS01B 250W, the mid-power BBS02B 750W (available in UART or CAN-BUS), and the heavy-duty BBSHD 1000W for off-road and private-land builds.
Bafang 250W (BBS01B) is Bafang's only conversion kit that's road-legal in the UK out of the box — capped to the 250W/15.5mph EAPC limit, with 80Nm of torque that's genuinely disproportionate for its power class. It's the right choice if you want a daily commuter or hybrid bike that stays fully road-legal with zero paperwork. Shop the Bafang 250W mid drive kit.
Bafang 750W (BBS02B) steps up to serious hill-climbing power while keeping the same reliable planetary-gear platform, and comes in two electronics variants — UART and CAN-BUS (see the comparison below). This is our most popular mid drive kit for mountain bikes, cargo bikes, and riders who've outgrown a 250W setup. Shop the 750W UART kit or the 750W CAN-BUS kit.
Bafang BBSHD 1000W is Bafang's most powerful and heaviest-duty mid-drive platform, built for off-road trail bikes, e-cargo builds, and private-land use where maximum torque matters more than road-legal status. If you're building a bike that won't see public roads, this is the kit that won't hold you back. Shop the BBSHD 1000W kit.
Both 750W kits share the same BBS02B motor, stator, and physical power output — the difference is entirely in the electronics. UART is Bafang's earlier-generation protocol, using a simple round 5-pin connector and a cheap USB programming cable, so current limits, speed caps, and pedal-assist tuning stay fully in your hands. CAN-BUS is the current-generation protocol (fitted to newer Bafang stock), using a pentagonal connector and Bafang's updated thumb-throttle response curve. The two are not cross-compatible — a UART display will not run on a CAN-BUS controller, so check which protocol your existing display or controller uses before ordering a replacement part rather than a full kit.
Pair your Bafang mid drive kit with a high-capacity 36V, 48V or 52V battery for longer rides.

WhatsApp Our WorkshopAll three are Bafang mid-drive motors that share the same core planetary-gear design, but they're built for different power bands. The BBS01B is a 250W kit, capped for UK road use. The BBS02B is a 750W kit available in UART or CAN-BUS electronics, aimed at hillier terrain and heavier bikes. The BBSHD is Bafang's 1000W flagship, built for off-road and private-land use where maximum torque and durability matter more than road-legal status.
The motor, stator and power output are identical — only the electronics differ. UART uses a round 5-pin connector and a low-cost USB programming cable, giving you full access to current limits, speed caps and PAS tuning. CAN-BUS is Bafang's newer protocol, using a pentagonal connector and an updated throttle response curve. The two protocols aren't interchangeable, so always match a replacement display or controller to your existing kit's protocol.
To be road-legal in the UK, an electric bike must be limited to 250W continuous power and 15.5mph assistance. The BBSHD 1000W exceeds both limits, so it's sold and intended for off-road and private-land use only — the same rule that applies to any conversion kit above 250W. If you need a kit that's road-legal from the box, choose the Bafang 250W (BBS01B) instead.
The BBS01B and BBS02B fit standard 68-73mm threaded bottom brackets (JIS/BSA), which covers the vast majority of mountain, hybrid and road bikes. The BBSHD is available for a wider 68-120mm range to suit fat bikes and cargo frames. If you're not sure what your bike takes, measure your bottom bracket shell width or message us before ordering and we'll confirm fitment.
Yes. Every Bafang mid drive kit we sell is compatible with multiple battery voltages (36V, 48V or 52V depending on the motor) and display options such as the DZ41 or 850C, so you can start with the base kit and upgrade the battery or display separately once you know how you're using the bike.
