A Straight Replacement When the Front Wheel Is the Weak Point
Most of the front wheels we take off bikes in the Cardiff workshop have not failed dramatically — they have just given up slowly. A buckle that will not true out, a cracked spoke bed around two or three nipples, a hub that has been running dry all winter. On a bike that has picked up a conversion kit, a battery and a rider who now averages a good deal more speed than before, that slow decline gets much faster: the whole machine is heavier, so every kerb hit and pothole lands harder on the front rim, and the front brake is doing more work to stop more mass.
This wheel is the sensible, unglamorous answer to that. Thirty-two steel spokes into a 32H steel rim, black on black, ready for a 6-bolt rotor. Steel is heavier than an aluminium build, but it is forgiving — it tends to bend and go back rather than crack — which is exactly the trade-off you want on a commuter or a converted hardtail that lives outdoors and gets ridden in all weathers.
Where This Sits Against Our MTX Wheels
Think of this as the entry point in our front wheel range. It covers a broken or worn-out wheel on a disc-brake mountain, trekking or hybrid bike without much fuss. If you are building for a heavier, faster conversion and want more spokes and a stronger rim under the front end, step up to the MTX Front Wheel Quick-Release (100mm / 9mm) or, for a Boost thru-axle fork, the MTX Front Wheel Thru Axle (110mm / 15mm). Wheelbuilders working from a hub they already own can start with the MTX 39 rim in 36H instead.
Whichever you choose, the wheel arrives bare — no tyre, no tube, no rotor and no cassette body, because this is a front wheel. If you are refreshing the front end completely, pair it with a tyre from the same category: the Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour for road and towpath mileage, or the Schwalbe Big Betty if the bike sees real trails.
Fitting Notes
Two things are worth doing on the day it arrives. First, check the rotor bolts to the correct torque and spin the wheel with the caliper in place to confirm the rotor is not rubbing — a new wheel almost always needs the caliper re-centred. Second, ride it gently for the first fifty miles or so and then have the spoke tension checked. Any freshly built wheel beds in, and on an electric bike the tension only ever gets tested harder. Our workshop can true and tension it for you if you would rather not do it yourself.
Warranty and Returns
Every front wheel purchased from All4eBikes is covered by a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects, alongside a 30-day return window.
Not Sure It Will Drop Into Your Fork?
Send us a photo of your fork ends and your current hub and we will confirm the fit before you order, so the wheel that arrives is the one that goes on.
