Siping, and Why It Works Through a British Winter
Schwalbe call the Johnny Watts 365 an all-season SUV tyre, and the “365” is the whole point: it is meant to be the tyre you leave on the bike from January to December. Two things make that plausible. The tread is heavily siped — cut with fine slits across the blocks — so each block can flex and squeegee a film of water off wet tarmac and wet roots, giving edges to bite with on surfaces where a solid block would simply skate.
The other half is the Addix 4Season compound, formulated to keep working when it is cold. Rubber stiffens as the temperature drops, and a summer compound on a frosty February morning is measurably less grippy than the same tyre in July. 4Season is Schwalbe’s answer to that, and on a bike ridden year-round in Wales it is the difference that shows up in the first genuinely cold week.
Double Defense, GreenGuard and the Load Rating
Punctures are handled by Double Defense: Schwalbe’s Double Defense construction pairs the GreenGuard puncture belt under the tread with added sidewall protection, so the tyre is reinforced both where you roll over glass and where you scuff a kerb or a rock. GreenGuard itself is made from recycled rubber, which is a small thing but a genuine one.
The specification that most buyers miss is the 120kg load rating. Fit a conversion kit, a battery and a rack to a bike and the total mass climbs quickly; add panniers and it climbs faster. A tyre rated to 120kg with an E-50 approval for assisted speeds beyond 25 km/h is specified for that job rather than tolerated in it — which is exactly why we stock it for conversion customers.
Where It Sits, and What to Fit It To
If you want more outright off-road bite and you ride real trails, the Schwalbe Big Betty 27.5 x 2.40 is the grippier, more aggressive choice. If your mileage is almost all road and towpath and punctures are the thing that ruins your week, the Marathon Plus Tour 27.5 x 2.35 goes further in that direction. The Johnny Watts sits between them and, for most converted bikes doing a bit of everything, it is the one we fit.
At 65mm it wants a reasonably wide rim underneath it. The MTX 39 rim in 36H is available in 27.5in, as are our built quick-release and thru-axle MTX front wheels. It is a wired-bead, tube-type tyre, so budget for a tube in 27.5 x 2.60 as well.
