Bafang’s own repair specialists have confirmed the reasoning directly: a steel gear here would make the BBSHD noticeably noisier, so nylon stays the factory choice on the highest-power mid-drive too, even though it’s also the part most likely to need replacing under hard use. It remains a deliberate sacrificial weak point — cheaper and safer to fail than letting overload reach the motor’s windings or bearings.
Under sustained high load and heat — high-amperage setups, deep snow, steep sustained climbs, or starting from a stop in too high a gear — the nylon teeth soften to a peanut-butter consistency and disintegrate. The giveaway symptom is the motor spinning audibly with no drive reaching the chainring. Given how much more torque a BBSHD puts through this gear than a BBS02, this is a genuinely common repair on hard-ridden BBSHD builds, not a rare fault.
