Same job as the clutch on the smaller BBS-series motors, built into a physically larger reduction-gear assembly to suit the BBSHD’s higher torque: it lets your pedals spin free of the drivetrain whenever the motor or momentum is turning the chain faster than you’re pedalling, so the motor can’t forcibly spin your feet backward off the pedals. Because the BBSHD pushes far more torque through this mechanism than a BBS01 or BBS02, wear symptoms here tend to show up more clearly and sooner under hard use.
Clunking, grinding or clicking when pedalling under load, a loose or slipping feel where pedal effort doesn’t fully translate to drive, or inconsistent engagement at low speed are the usual symptoms. On a BBSHD specifically, heavier riders and higher power draw put more stress on the clutch pawls, so these symptoms are often reported as more pronounced than the equivalent fault on a BBS02.
This is a full internal job: opening the motor casing, removing the reduction-gear assembly, and swapping the clutch before reassembly — not a bolt-on part. If you’d rather have it diagnosed and fitted properly, our full Bafang service covers this repair.
