Mounted on the motor’s output shaft, this pinion is the first stage of the BBSHD’s two-stage gear reduction, meshing with the secondary reduction gear to bring the motor’s high shaft speed down to something usable at the crank. Because the BBSHD is Bafang’s highest-torque mid-drive, this stage sees more load than the equivalent part on a BBS01 or BBS02, and it’s mechanically distinct — not interchangeable with the smaller motors’ pinion.
Metal shavings in the gearbox grease around a worn pinion are a reliable sign the mating gear surface has also worn, since the two parts run directly against each other under load. Replacing the pinion on its own when this is the case usually means reopening the motor again shortly after for the other part — worth inspecting both while the case is already open.
