Steel replacement for the factory nylon reduction gear · Fixes the classic “peanut-buttered gear” failure
The reduction gear sits between the motor’s fast-spinning rotor shaft — turning at well over 2,000 RPM — and the crank output, multiplying torque down to something usable. Bafang builds this gear from nylon by design: it runs quieter than metal, and it’s a deliberate sacrificial weak point, cheaper and safer to fail than letting stress damage the motor itself. The trade-off is that nylon has a well-documented failure mode under sustained high load.
Under high heat and load — hard takeoffs from a stop in too high a gear, steep hills, or a heavier rider leaning on the throttle — the nylon teeth soften to a peanut-butter consistency and disintegrate. The tell-tale symptom is the motor audibly spinning while the chainring doesn’t turn: you can hear the motor running, but nothing is driving the wheel. Other signs include grinding or rattling from inside the case and a sudden, complete loss of assist power. A steel gear removes this failure mode entirely, which is why it’s become a standard upgrade rather than a niche one — Bafang itself later moved its higher-end “Ultra” motor to a stock metal gear after the same issue.
This suits the older-generation BBS02B CAN-BUS kit line, but because of the old/new version split, please confirm your exact motor with us first rather than assume fit from the kit name alone.
