What Boost 110 and a 15mm Axle Actually Change
Two separate things are going on in the name, and they do different jobs. The 15mm thru axle replaces the hollow-axle-and-skewer arrangement with a single solid rod that passes through the hub and threads into the fork leg, clamping the lowers together as one unit. That removes the small amount of play a quick-release interface always has, so the wheel sits in exactly the same place every time it goes back in and the rotor holds its alignment in the caliper under hard braking.
The 110mm Boost spacing does something else: it moves the hub flanges further apart. A wider flange spacing gives each spoke a wider bracing angle to the rim, and a wider bracing angle means the wheel resists being pushed sideways more effectively for the same spoke tension. In practice that is a stiffer, more predictable front wheel through corners — which is exactly what you want carrying the extra weight of a converted bike into a wet Cardiff roundabout.
The Front Wheel a Converted Bike Deserves
The front wheel takes an unfair share of the punishment on an electric bike. It carries no motor and no battery, so it is easy to overlook — but it does the majority of the braking, and it is the wheel that finds every pothole first. Add the weight and speed a conversion kit brings and a stock wheel that was fine on a 14kg hardtail starts loosening spokes and drifting out of true on a bike that now weighs half as much again.
An MTX rim on heavy-duty spokes, hung on a Boost thru-axle hub, is our answer to that. It holds tension, it stays where you point it, and it does not need re-truing every month. If you are keeping your existing hub and want to rebuild rather than replace, the MTX 39 rim in 36H is the same rim family sold bare. For a lighter-duty disc-brake replacement on a budget, the 32-spoke Front Wheel MTB is the simpler option.
Fitting and First Rides
Thru-axle systems are torque-sensitive: use the figure printed on your fork or axle rather than pulling it up as tight as it will go, because over-tightening can distort the fork lowers and under-tightening lets the axle work loose. Fit the rotor, re-centre the caliper, and check that the axle threads engage cleanly before you commit to it. The wheel comes without a tyre, tube or rotor.
Pair it with a tyre to match the riding: the Schwalbe Big Betty 27.5 x 2.40 for aggressive off-road grip, the Johnny Watts 365 27.5 x 2.60 for year-round mixed-surface use. Have the spoke tension checked after the first fifty miles — our Cardiff workshop will do it while you wait.
Warranty and Returns
Every MTX front wheel purchased from All4eBikes is covered by a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects, alongside a 30-day return window.
Is Your Fork Really 110mm x 15mm?
Measure between the inner faces of the fork ends and send us a photo — we will confirm the axle standard and the right wheel size before you order.
