Mounted on the pedal-crank side inside the reduction-gear assembly, this one-way clutch lets the pedals spin independently of the drivetrain whenever the motor or momentum is turning the chain faster than you’re pedalling. Put simply, it’s what stops the motor forcibly spinning your feet backward off the pedals when you coast or when the assist kicks in hard. Without a functioning clutch, that separation between motor speed and pedal speed disappears.
A clunking, grinding or clicking noise when pedalling — especially under load or at low speed — is the most commonly reported symptom. Some riders also notice a loose or “spongy” feel where the pedals don’t fully engage the drive, or slip under a hard pedalling effort. If you’ve pulled the motor apart already and found metal shavings inside the case, that’s consistent with a failing clutch too.
This is a genuine workshop job, not a five-minute swap: it means opening the motor casing, removing the axle lock nut with the correct Bafang tool, extracting the bearing and gear assembly, then compressing the clutch’s spring tabs to swap it out before reassembling in the right order. Fits the BBS01 250W kit, BBS02 750W UART kit and BBS02B CAN-BUS kit. Pairs with the BBS01 controller, and if you’re replacing other worn internals at the same time, the BBS02 rotor is the same-generation part most often replaced alongside it.
