Why “Offset” Matters on a BBSHD
The chainring bolts to the motor’s output driver, and on a BBSHD that driver sits further out from the bike’s centreline than a standard bottom bracket would. A regular, non-offset chainring on a BBSHD pushes the chain onto an angle to reach the cassette, which increases chain rub on the frame, reduces shifting quality into the smallest cogs, and wears the chain and cassette faster than it should. An offset chainring is machined with the mounting face shifted inward to correct that angle back toward straight.
Signs Your Chainline Needs Correcting
Chain jumping or derailing under load, the chain rubbing audibly on the chainstay or frame, poor shifting into your lowest gears, or visibly uneven wear concentrated on one side of the smallest cassette cogs are all symptoms of an uncorrected chainline on a BBSHD. If any of that sounds familiar, an offset chainring is the fix, not a derailleur adjustment.
Fitment and Related Parts
This fits the BBSHD 1000W conversion kit and pairs with the BBSHD controller. If you’re replacing other BBSHD drivetrain wear parts at the same time, see the BBSHD clutch and metal internal gear — all three commonly get replaced together on a hard-used BBSHD. You’ll need a matching bicycle chain to go with a new chainring. For a full teardown or fitting service, see our full Bafang service.
