Measuring Your Bottom Bracket Properly, Not Just by Eye

Remove the crankset entirely

A visual check with cranks still fitted is unreliable — you need clear access to the shell faces and internal threading (or lack of it).

Measure shell width with a ruler or vernier caliper, not a tape measure alone

Measure straight across the outer faces. 68mm and 73mm are the two BSA widths a standard Bafang shell is built for; 100mm for the BBSHD. Anything reading noticeably different from these needs a closer look.

Look for threads, and check which way they turn

A genuine threaded BSA shell shows visible internal threads on both sides. English/BSA threading is reverse (left-hand) on the drive side — if you're not confident identifying this yourself, a photo of the shell is enough for us to confirm.

Check for a smooth bore instead of threads

No visible threading, with cups that simply press into the frame, means press-fit — see the section below on what your options are.

This is general guidance based on typical models, not a guarantee for every year and spec of a given range — brands do change bottom bracket standards between model years, so always confirm your specific bike rather than relying on the brand name alone.

Press-Fit Shells: When an Adapter Actually Works

Threaded conversion adapters exist for some press-fit standards, effectively giving you a BSA-threaded interface bonded or pressed into the original shell. Reliability varies by press-fit standard and by adapter quality — a poorly fitted adapter can creak, loosen, or fail to hold the motor's lock ring securely over time, which is a bigger problem on a motorised bottom bracket than on a standard one. We don't recommend adapters as a default first choice; we'd rather confirm your exact press-fit standard and give you a straight answer on whether a reliable adapter genuinely exists for it, or whether a hub motor conversion is the more dependable route for your specific frame.

e-MTB and Full-Suspension Specific Issues

Beyond the basic bottom bracket check, full-suspension frames raise two extra questions a hardtail doesn't: whether the motor's wider case clears the suspension linkage and pivot hardware around the bottom bracket area, and whether motor cabling can be routed without snagging or over-stretching through the suspension's full travel. Neither is a guaranteed dealbreaker, but both need checking against your specific frame, ideally with photos of the pivot area near the bottom bracket, before ordering — particularly for a BBSHD, given its wider case.

Chainstay Clearance and Chain Line in Detail

Beyond the bottom bracket shell itself, you need enough clearance between the shell face and the chainstay on the motor side — tight clearance here is a common reason an otherwise-compatible frame still needs adjustment. Chainline also matters: standard 7–9-speed drivetrains generally accommodate a Bafang motor's chainline with minimal fuss, while tighter 10- and 11-speed setups sometimes need more careful spacer selection or a narrower chainring to avoid chain rub in certain gears.

Carbon Frames: What "Rated for Conversion" Actually Means

Not every carbon bottom bracket shell is built to handle the clamping force and torque a motor's lock ring applies, even if the frame itself is structurally strong for normal riding. "Rated for conversion" specifically means the manufacturer has confirmed the BB shell area can take this additional load without risk of cracking. If your frame manufacturer hasn't explicitly confirmed this, we'd generally recommend a hub motor conversion instead, which doesn't apply this kind of load through the bottom bracket at all.

FAQ

My bottom bracket measures close to 68mm but not exactly — is that a problem?
Small measuring imprecision with a tape measure is common; the two genuine BSA widths are 68mm and 73mm specifically, so a reading close to one of these is more likely measuring error than a non-standard shell. A caliper measurement, or photos sent to us, will confirm which it actually is.
Do all Halfords-brand bikes use a standard threaded bottom bracket?
Most standard hybrid and commuter models do, but higher-spec road and some mountain bike ranges increasingly use press-fit standards, so it's worth checking your specific model and year rather than assuming from the brand alone.
Is a press-fit adapter ever a genuinely good long-term solution?
For some press-fit standards, a well-fitted adapter can be reliable long-term. The variability between adapter quality and press-fit standards means we assess this case by case rather than recommending it as a default — a hub motor conversion sidesteps the question entirely if you'd rather not deal with the uncertainty.
What specifically goes wrong on full-suspension frames if compatibility isn't checked properly?
The most common issues are the motor case fouling a suspension pivot or linkage component, and motor cabling snagging or over-stretching through the suspension's travel range. Both are avoidable with a proper check beforehand, but can mean a frustrating partial installation if missed.
Can you confirm compatibility from photos alone, without seeing the bike in person?
In most cases, yes — clear photos of the bottom bracket shell (cranks removed) plus a wider frame shot and the bike's make, model, and year are usually enough for us to give a confident answer. Bringing the bike in is only needed for genuinely borderline or unusual cases.
