Quick answer: Most quality lithium-ion e-bike batteries last 3–5 years or 500–800 full charge cycles before capacity drops enough to noticeably affect range, whichever comes first. How you charge, store, and use the battery has a bigger effect on its actual lifespan than the number printed on the spec sheet.

What "Lifespan" Actually Measures

Lithium-ion batteries don't fail suddenly — they degrade gradually, losing a small percentage of their original capacity with every full charge cycle. A battery isn't "dead" when it reaches the end of its rated cycle life; it typically still works, just with noticeably reduced range, commonly down to 70–80% of its original capacity at that point. Whether that's still acceptable depends entirely on how far you need to ride.

Storing Your Battery Correctly

If you're not riding for an extended period — over winter, for example — store the battery at around 40–60% charge rather than full or empty, in a cool, dry place indoors, away from direct heat sources. Check it every few weeks and top up slightly if it's dropped a lot, since batteries do self-discharge slowly even in storage. Avoid leaving a battery in an unheated shed or garage through a UK winter, where damp and cold together are a worse combination than either alone.

How We Actually Test Remaining Capacity

The display's estimated range is calculated from voltage and recent usage patterns, not a direct measurement of remaining capacity — which is why two batteries showing "3 bars" on their displays can have genuinely different real-world range left in them. On the bench, we run a controlled discharge test: fully charge the pack, discharge it at a steady rate while logging actual Ah delivered, and compare that figure against the battery's original rated capacity.

Signs Your Battery Is on Its Way Out

Replacement is usually the right call once range has dropped enough to genuinely affect your rides — individual cell degradation in a pack this age isn't generally cost-effective to repair.

Get it diagnosed before assuming replacement is needed. Some faults are a repairable BMS or connector issue rather than genuine cell failure.

Is it bad to charge my e-bike battery every night?
Charging every night isn't inherently harmful, but if it means the battery regularly sits at 100% for many hours before your next ride, that's the part that adds unnecessary wear over time. If you don't need a full charge for your next ride, charging to a partial level or timing the charge to finish closer to when you'll ride is gentler on the cells.
Do e-bike batteries lose range faster in cold UK winters?
Yes, but this is a temporary effect, not permanent damage — lithium-ion batteries deliver less usable capacity in cold temperatures, and range recovers once the battery warms up again. The genuine long-term risk in winter is storage, not riding: don't leave a battery in freezing storage for extended periods, and let a cold battery warm up before charging it.
Can I replace individual cells in my battery pack instead of buying a whole new one?
Technically possible for some pack designs, but it requires matching cell chemistry, capacity, and internal resistance carefully across the whole pack, and isn't something we'd generally recommend as a DIY job given the safety considerations involved with lithium-ion packs. For most riders, a full replacement battery is the safer and more practical route once a pack has genuinely degraded.
How do I know my exact battery's real capacity versus when it was new?
A proper battery capacity test, using a discharge tester rather than just watching the display's estimated range, gives an accurate reading of actual remaining capacity against the original rated Ah. Will a new battery work with my existing controller and display?
As long as the replacement matches your original battery's voltage and connector type, it should work with your existing setup without further changes.
