The sensor clips onto the derailleur’s shift cable. Any movement of that cable — meaning you’re shifting gears — triggers a signal to the controller, which briefly cuts motor output for well under a second so the chain can move between cogs or chainrings without the motor still driving it under load. That short cutoff is what stops a mid-drive motor’s torque from grinding the chain sideways across the cassette every time you change gear.
Shifting a mid-drive under power without this sensor produces a loud crack or bang from the drivetrain, visible chain skipping, and noticeably faster chain and cassette wear — many riders end up instinctively backing off the pedals every time they shift just to avoid it. Bafang treats this as recommended on a BBS01, strongly recommended on a BBS02, and effectively essential on a BBSHD given how much more torque it’s protecting the drivetrain from.
Fits the BBS02 750W UART kit and BBSHD 1000W kit alike, and works alongside the PAS sensor and BBSHD clutch, both of which also protect the drivetrain during shifts under power.
