3-phase wound stator · BBSHD 1000W specific · Two hardware generations exist — check your connector type first
The stator is the stationary, copper-wound iron core inside the motor casing. Energised in sequence by the controller, it generates the rotating magnetic field the rotor’s magnets react against — this is the part that actually does the electromagnetic work of turning the motor. It usually also carries the Hall sensor assembly that reads rotor position for commutation timing.
The most common cause is sustained high load at low RPM — “lugging” the motor up a hill in too high a gear — which builds heat in the windings faster than it can dissipate. Symptoms include a complete or intermittent loss of power, a motor casing too hot to keep your hand on, and in advanced cases a burnt or “skunk” smell along with windings that look dark and discoloured instead of their normal copper colour rather than blown insulation failing quietly. Catching it early, before the smell and discolouration set in, usually means a shorter repair.
