Both formats are lithium-ion packs built around the same cell technology — the difference is entirely in the case shape and where the battery sits on the bike.
A triangle battery is shaped to fill some or all of the frame's main triangle, mounted using bottle-cage bosses or a dedicated bracket, sitting between the top tube, seat tube, and down tube. A downtube battery is a slimmer, elongated case that mounts directly to the down tube using bottle-cage bosses, sitting below and outside the main triangle rather than inside it.
Triangle Batteries — Pros and Cons

Capacity and Range: Does Shape Affect How Far You Go?
The battery shape itself doesn't determine range — capacity (Ah) and voltage do. But shape does influence how much capacity a given frame can physically accommodate. A triangle battery generally has more internal volume to work with than a downtube pack constrained to a slim, elongated profile, which is why our highest-capacity packs (52V 28Ah and above) are more commonly available in triangle form.

Weight Distribution and Ride Feel
A triangle-mounted battery sits closer to the bike's natural centre of gravity — low, central, and between the wheels. A downtube battery sits slightly lower and more forward, which most riders don't notice in normal use, but which can be marginally more perceptible on technical off-road terrain where weight placement affects how the bike responds to being thrown around.
For mid drive conversions in particular, a triangle battery complements the motor's own low, central mounting position at the bottom bracket — the two together keep the bike's handling as close as possible to how it felt before conversion. This is one reason triangle batteries are the more common pairing on performance-focused mid drive builds.
Frame Compatibility Checklist
If you're considering a triangle battery, measure the internal height, width, and depth of your frame's main triangle and compare against the battery's dimensions before ordering. A triangle that looks large from the outside can still be too shallow or narrow for a given pack.
Both formats typically mount via bottle-cage bosses. Confirm your frame has bosses in the down tube (for a downtube battery) or within the triangle (for a triangle battery) — some frames only have one or the other.
Step-through, small, and compact frames very often lack the triangle space for a triangle battery, making a downtube pack the practical default. Larger hardtail and touring frames usually have room for either format.
If you ride off-road or over rough surfaces, confirm a downtube battery's lowest point won't be at risk of impact. Triangle batteries, sitting higher inside the frame, generally have better clearance for this kind of riding.
