A Converted Bike Weighs More Than the Stand Was Designed For
Most kickstands come off a production line aimed at a 12 kg pedal bike. Add a hub motor, a battery and a controller and that same bike is often carrying 8 to 10 kg more, and — critically — the weight is not where it used to be. A down tube or rack battery is high up and toward one end, so the bike does not just get heavier, it gets top-heavy and unbalanced. That is why a stand that coped fine on the original bike suddenly folds or lets the bike topple after a conversion.
Two features here address that directly. The thickened aluminium section resists bending under sustained side load, which is what actually fails on a light stand — it rarely snaps, it slowly bends until the lean angle is wrong and the bike falls over anyway. And the adjustable length lets you set the lean angle properly for the loaded weight, rather than leaving the bike either standing too upright to be stable or leaning so far that a gust pushes it over.
Setting It Up So It Holds
Get the length right first. Park the bike on level ground with the stand down and look at the lean — you want it clearly leaning onto the stand, not balancing near vertical. A near-vertical bike will go over in either direction; a properly leaned one is only held by the stand and gravity, which is stable. Set this with the battery fitted, not with the bike stripped, because that changes the balance point.
Then check where the stand sits relative to your crank. If the pedal or crank arm can hit the stand at the bottom of its stroke, move the mounting position rather than living with it. On a conversion, also make sure the stand is clear of your motor cable — that cable runs along the chainstay on most rear hub kits and a stand clamp bolted straight over it will chafe through the insulation eventually. Route it first, clamp it second.
If your frame has no mounting plate at all, message us before you order rather than after. Some full-suspension and lightweight frames genuinely have nowhere sensible for a stand to go, and it is better to know that in advance. Our Cardiff workshop can fit and set one up if you would rather it was done properly first time.
