116 Links Is a Starting Point, Not a Finished Length
Chains are supplied long deliberately. 116 links is enough to reach around the biggest sprocket and the biggest chainring on the vast majority of 5-8 speed bikes, and the chain is then shortened to suit your particular frame, chainstay length and gear range. Get the length wrong and you will feel it immediately — too short and the rear derailleur is yanked hard in the largest sprocket, too long and the chain slaps the stay and drops off the chainring on rough ground. The usual method is to run the chain over the largest chainring and largest sprocket without threading it through the derailleur, pull it snug, and add two links. If you would rather not guess, our Cardiff workshop will size and fit it while you wait.
On a Conversion, the Chain Is a Consumable
This is the part of the drivetrain that changes most when you electrify a bike, and it is worth understanding before you fit one. A mid-drive motor — a Bafang BBS01B, BBS02B or BBSHD from our conversion kit range — puts its power through the bottom bracket, which means every watt it makes travels down the same chain your legs were driving. That is far more sustained torque than a rider produces alone, and it wears chains at a rate that surprises people coming from an unassisted bike. Riders who habitually pull away in a high gear under full assist see it fastest.
The practical consequence is simple: check the chain often and replace it early. A chain that has stretched past roughly 0.75% starts cutting new profiles into the sprocket teeth, and once that has happened a fresh chain will skip on the worn cluster and you end up buying the cluster too. At this price the chain is by a distance the cheapest part in the system, and replacing it on schedule is what keeps your 7 speed freewheel and rear derailleur alive. If yours has already gone past that point, replace the chain and the rear cluster together as a set — a new chain on old sprockets rarely settles.
